Water is arguably the most valuable of all resources (next to oxygen) and is the ultimate renewable resource since it falls directly from the sky and is easily stored for future use. Collecting and using water where it falls requires the least amount of energy of all conceivable methods and can even work off of gravity alone. By capturing abundant run-off from heavy storm events, which are likely to increase as the world warms, rainwater harvesting also serves to reduce water from storms which cause foundation damage, erosion, floods and degrade the quality of rivers and streams. While capturing the water from just one house doesn’t seem like it could affect water quality 20 miles downstream, it truly does and if everyone employed rainwater harvesting, a dramatic difference would be seen. In a social context, distributed and independent water systems are one of the best ways to ensure that all people have equal access to water and the most integrated and intelligent water conservation strategies are used. Across the world, more people suffer from health issues due to water quality and dehydration than anything else and the need for water is obviously desperate in some places. Rainwater harvesting provides an affordable and sensible long-term solution to the most important need of all living things- the need for water. |
