I like this conversion but the tanks are just way too expensive. At $1/gallon, the cost of the tanks alone are 10k for a medium sized pool. I wonder if there is any cheaper alternative…

As it is necessary to collect rainwater and nice that it is used for some other purpose also as collecting in swimming pool. This helps a lot in conserving water and use the waste water in somewhere.

Rainwater harvesting barrels can be bought very cheaply if you source ex food and drink barrels.
Ex Orange juice barrels which hold 1520 Litres (394 US Gallons) can be bought for only £164.50 in the UK and I am sure they will be a similar price in the US. It is also good for the environment because it recycles the barrels.
